1.Q:The first paragraph sets out the scene but also depicts Min's words and actions. What do you tell you about her?
A:She is a responsible and patient person, for she takes off her jacket and wipe the flag clean each time a viewer left.
2.Q:The most dramatic conflict is between Min and the artist. What other conflicts does the narrative present or imply?
A:One of the conflicts that the narrative implys is the differences between two cultures. Different backgrounds and education result in the blame on the author from the artist. They two think in two totally different ways. One tries to protect the flag while the other intends to stain it or even burn it.
3.Q:Of those conflicts, which is the most important and why?
A:I think the most significant conflict is the different opinions on freedom between the Chinese and the American. Americans take America for granted and always ask for more freedom. But the Chinese view American society is already full of freedom and individual benefits.
4.Q:In the last paragraph, Min states that she has learned about freedom. What else did she learn from her overall experience? How can you turn what she learned into the essay's thesis?
A:Since what she did does not please the artist, and vice versa, the author may learnt that she should not assume what she did is good for the artist. We should not think that we always know what others want.
5.Q:In paragraph 4 and 5, Min describes the intentions behind the artist's work. Explain whether you find that part of her narrative realistic, exaggerated, or some place in between?
A:I think that part is realistic, because democratic Americans can do something like burning the flag as long as it is illegal and Chinese people were really that radical and patriotic during the Cultural Revolution period as the author narrates.
