A tutorship experience

    

    Since the first year of senior high, I had been keen on pursuing well-made clothes and electronics. But one tutorship experience totally changed my way of spending money.

     One day in my freshman year, I saw a register book incidentally in an office on campus. It was for students to get some financial support by being a tutor. At that time, I was unaccustomed to the idle freshman life very different from that of the tensive high school. Hence, I signed up the tutorship and soon got a chance to tutor a little schoolboy.

     Unfortunately, I suffered a lot each time from tutoring the kid, Andy. It was 30 degree below zero outside in Harbin's freezing winter. I was hardly able to hold a pen when I got to Andy's room. What's more, Andy is quite mischievous and disobedient, which is normal for kids at his age as a fact. When I tried to ask him to read something after me or answer my questions, he would take down a comic book from the bookcase and beg me to read to him. If I refused, he would turn to play games with just some pencils and a ruler. Beyond that, Andy's mother always scolded him strictly in my face which made me so uncomfortable that I could barely go on with the lesson. In addition, Andy's mother never gave me a single warm welcome when I appeared at their door or any appreciative words for my hard work. Maybe she was always displeased by her naughty boy.

     Each time before I went to their apartment, I needed to go through a long self persuasion to pluck up courage. And each time after the tutorship, a lot of complaints would grow in my mind. Gradually, I got inpatient about the kid and tired of my part-time job. I quit the job in the end.

     One of the lessons I get from this experience is that it calls for plenty of patience and efforts to earn money and keep a job. Our parents must have paid the price by hard working for what we have. We should not take what they give us for granted. It is they but not we who have earned that.

     So, since then, I would think about the sweat and toil my parents paid on their jobs whenever I want to spend money lavishly.

Milk Tea Time

Milk tea has been a part of daily life in many areas around the world. Different making of milk tea not only provides us with various choices, but more important, a practical access point to understand the cultural differences.

No matter milk tea from what part of the earth, it is simply made from milk and tea, apparently. But the kind of tea used and creative ingredients added separate them from each other.

Pearl milk tea from Taiwan has been introduced to many Asian countries and widely adored by people. The pearl is actually a small ball made from flour. When it's added to average milk tea, you can chew and drink at the same time, which makes milk tea more interesting. Similarly, pudding and coconut can also be put in Taiwanese milk tea.

It is said that an English man would interrupt a war to have his afternoon tea, which definitely points out how much afternoon tea means to every English individual. Much different from Taiwanese milk tea sold in numerous drink shops scattered on streets, in a seemingly more exquisite way, English styled milk tea is put is a little cup, enjoyed along with pastry or snacks. It also offers English folks a relaxing time to chat with each other and have a quality time.

HongKong milk tea was developed on the basis of the English one. HongKong people could not get used to the mild flavor of the English one. As a result, they added the percentage of tea to make it into the Hong Kong one we knew today.

These three kinds of milk tea has been tasted, fond of or even kept as a everyday habit by many people around the world. However, much less people know that there are three minorities in the north China who have been making and drinking milk tea since long ago. Mongolians, Kazaks, Kirgizs make milk tea every day on the vast prairie. But the adding of butter made from beef's fat and salt as well as the usage of completely fresh goat's or mare's milk give their tea a totally different taste with the sweet and silky kinds.

I am lucky enough to have already tried all the four kinds of milk tea I have mentioned, and I prefer ones "Made in Taiwan" and "Made in Chinese Prairie". The wonderful thing about Taiwan's milk tea is that you can choose the amount of sugar and ice you want, which shows the social emphasis on individual preference and convenience. And milk tea made on prairie brings you closer to nature. You can hardly bear the simple and rough flavor at the beginning, but gradually, the feeling of having a intimate contact with the wild nature will attract you to drink on and on.

Milk tea is not just a drink. It is a mirror of the tea makers' life. I am expecting to try more kinds of milk tea and understand more kinds of lives.

A: She doesn't like the formalized, rigid kind of music but freewheeling music.

A: Williams gave several examples. There was country at the Copa and at Town Hall. The New York radio claimed the largest audience of country. And some country stars became big. Also the Wall Street was full of bankers dressed like cowboys.

A: The opening part unfolds the scene in which a tennis player tormented the narrator by extending the meal after the closing time. I find references to that in paragraph 6 and 10. They help unify the essay by reminding readers the scene at the very beginning again and again.

2. At what point in the essay does the author move from the particular to the general? Which gets the most emphasis?

A: The author moves from the particular to the general right from the beginning of paragraph 7. The prejudice toward food service positions and the low social stratum of them gets the most emphasis.

3. Reexamine the essay as one that poses a problem and a solution. What is the problem? The solution?

A: The problem is the common social prejudice against the food-service job and the consequent indecent behavior while eating out. The solution is to step down from spurious pedestals and pay waiters and waitresses respect.

4. To what extent does Wilkins' experience coincide with your own? That of your friends?

A: Nothing occurs to me.

5. Where do you find Wilkins' thesis? Explain whether you find that placement effective.

A: At the end of the essay. It acts as the conclusion and the good wish for the occupation.

  A: The energy people spent in health clubs to be fit is a huge waste.

  A: In the past, people exercise through their daily works. But now, people exercise on machines which produces nothing.

  A: His solution is letting people on machines create useable energy and health clubs generate energy.

4. Q: What do you find to be the main subject of the essay? Exercise? Fads? Waste? Entropy? American culture? What reasons can you find for your choice?

  A: I think the main subject is entropy. Because Barlow starts the body of the essay by the introduction of the term, entropy. And he mentions Richard Simmons, the King of Entropy in the middle of the essay. Again, entropy appears in the conclusion. And the thesis of the essay is to reduce the entropy and make it useable when people do exercise.

5. Q: To what extent, if any, do you, do you agree with Barlow's thesis?

  A: I agree with him a lot. People ride elevators all the time but at the same time pay to exercise in health clubs. It is a waste of money and energy. Instead, people should exercise in more natural and producing ways.
